The Eco Institutes programme is a joint initiative by WWF-Malaysia and Teacher Education Institutes Malaysia, Ministry of Education (IPGM KPM) in partnership with Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI), University Science of Malaysia (USM) and Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak.
The Eco-Institute programme is adapted from the Eco-School programme, which was launched in 1994 by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and now includes over 35,000 schools distributed around the world (as at Dec 2009).
Eco-Institute aim at mobilizing the whole institute to empower student teachers to adopt an active role in environmental decision-making and action in their teacher education institute (TEI) and in their community. Teacher Education Institutes that have successfully achieved this goal are awarded a Green Flag – a prestigious eco-label testifying the campus’s commitment to fostering sustainable lifestyles.
Eco-Institute is an opportunity to improve the quality of life of your teacher education institute community by:
Democratizing the process of decision making,
Setting relevant targets for the improvement of the TEI’s environment,
Designing and implementing a plan, in line with the TEI’s resources, to achieve these targets,
Integrating curriculum work with the day-to-day realities of the TEI community,
Exploring ways of fostering team work within your TEI as well as the community in which it is housed, and
Networking and sharing experiences and expertise with other local and foreign TEI.
One of the tools introduced and implemented in all the TEI campuses is the 7-steps methodology, which are:
STEP 1: Formation of an Eco-Institutes committee
STEP 2: Environmental review
STEP 3: Development of an action plan
STEP 4: Informing and involving
STEP 5: Monitoring and evaluation
STEP 6: Curriculum work
STEP 7: Eco-code
